The joining fee, the contract and the classes

A monthly gym price can hide a joining fee, a minimum term and a cancellation penalty. Compare the total commitment.

Ask for the total first-year cost

Joining fee, registration, access card, annual maintenance and the monthly fee are separate lines. Ask for the total first-year cost before comparing two gyms.

Check the contract term

A monthly membership may have a minimum term or a notice period. Ask how to cancel, whether a medical certificate is needed and what happens if you move.

Access and class rules

Peak-hour access, guest passes, group classes, personal training and pool access may be included or charged separately. Check the timetable for the classes you actually attend.

Location and timing

A cheaper gym that is hard to reach is not cheaper if you do not go. Compare the travel time and the hours that match your schedule.

Trial before committing

Ask for a trial or a day pass. Check the equipment, changing rooms and crowd level at the time you would train.
