The appliance price is not the cost of owning it

Capacity, energy, installation, warranty and spare parts decide whether a cheap appliance stays cheap.

Updated

Match capacity to the household

A washing machine, fridge or dishwasher that is too small runs more often; one that is too large wastes energy and space. Measure the cavity, the door swing and the access route before ordering.

Energy and water use recur

An appliance with a lower purchase price can cost more over its life through electricity and water. Compare the annual consumption label, not just the sticker price.

Installation is a separate line

Delivery, connection, an old-appliance removal, a longer hose or a new socket can add to the price. Ask what the retailer includes and what the installer will not do.

Warranty and spare parts

Check the warranty period, what it covers and whether spare parts are available locally. A brand with no local service network can turn a small failure into a replacement.

Noise and placement

Noise matters in an open-plan home. Check the decibel rating and whether the appliance needs clearance for ventilation.
