How to compare an insurance premium without missing the point

The cheapest premium is not the cheapest policy. Excess, limits, exclusions and the claims process decide what you actually pay.

Match the policy to the risk

Health, car, home, travel and life cover protect different things. Do not compare a travel policy with a health policy because both have a low monthly price. Start with the event you are protecting against.

The premium is not the only number

Look at the excess, the co-pay, the annual limit, the sub-limits and the exclusions. A policy with a low premium and a high excess can leave you paying most of a small claim yourself.

Ask whether the excess applies per claim, per year or per condition.

Age, history and location drive the price

Insurers price the risk they see: age, claims history, occupation, vehicle value, property age and location. A quote is personal, so a friend’s premium is not your benchmark.

Annual and monthly are different contracts

A monthly instalment can carry a surcharge or a shorter cancellation window. Compare the total annual cost and the cancellation terms, not the monthly figure alone.

Read the exclusions before the discount

A discount on a policy that excludes the treatment or the driver you need is not a saving. Read the exclusions and the claims procedure before comparing the price.
