Start with memory, not the processor name
A fast processor with too little memory still stutters when you keep a browser, a chat client and an editor open. For general work, 16GB is the comfortable floor in 2026. For heavy local development or virtual machines, 32GB is the safer target.
On soldered-memory laptops, the decision is permanent. On socketed designs, you can defer the upgrade — but check that the memory type and slot count are documented.
Storage is a workflow decision
A 256GB drive is workable for documents and streaming, but local photo libraries, video projects and development toolchains consume it quickly. 512GB is the more comfortable starting point if you keep files locally.
Check whether storage is replaceable. A soldered drive turns a storage shortage into a new-laptop decision.
Brightness and weight are daily costs
A display that cannot reach roughly 400 nits is difficult outdoors. A laptop above 1.5kg is noticeable in a bag every day. These are not benchmark numbers, but they are the numbers you feel most often.
Repairability is the long-term counterweight: a replaceable battery and keyboard can extend a laptop's useful life far beyond a small performance advantage.
