The watch price is not the ownership cost

Phone compatibility, cellular service, sensors and subscriptions decide what a smartwatch costs after the box.

Updated

Check phone compatibility first

Some watches work only with one phone platform. Confirm that the watch, the health features and the messaging apps work with the phone you own.

Cellular is a separate plan

A cellular watch needs a mobile plan and may carry an activation fee. If you always carry your phone, the cellular premium may not be worth it.

Sensors and subscriptions

ECG, blood-oxygen, sleep and fitness features may require a subscription or a specific region. Check what is included and what is paywalled.

Battery and charging

Battery life depends on the display, always-on mode, GPS and sleep tracking. A watch that lasts one day needs a daily charging routine.

Size, band and comfort

Case size and band material change how the watch feels. Try it on and check whether the band is standard or proprietary.
