Size, panel and ports before the picture mode

A TV is a panel, a processor and a set of ports. The right size depends on the room, not the spec sheet.

Updated

Size and viewing distance

A larger screen is more immersive, but it can overwhelm a small room. Measure the wall and the viewing distance before choosing a size.

Panel type changes the trade-off

OLED, mini-LED and standard LED differ in contrast, brightness and viewing angle. A bright room and a dark room favour different panels.

HDR and brightness

HDR support is not the same as HDR performance. Check peak brightness, local dimming and whether the streaming apps you use support the format.

Ports and the sound system

Count the HDMI ports and check the version for your console, soundbar and streaming stick. Built-in speakers are usually the weakest part; budget for a soundbar if sound matters.

The total setup cost

Wall mount, stand, cables, delivery and installation are separate. Compare the delivered and installed price, not the shelf price.
